2013 SAFE Award Winners Announced
2013 SAFE Award winners announced
The Louisiana Chemical Association announced the winners of the Serious About Fostering Excellence (SAFE) Awards at its annual meeting on October 25 in New Orleans.
This year, the awards were broken down into two main categories, Most Improved and Best in Louisiana. In the two main categories, the awards are then broken down into classes based on the number of employees at each plant.
The winners of the SAFE Awards for Most Improved were:
- Class I (1-100 employees), BASF, DNT, Geismar
- Class II (101-200 employees), Momentive, St Charles
- Class III (201-400 employees), Honeywell, Geismar
- Class IV (more than 400 employees), Axiall, Lake Charles
The Best in Louisiana winners were:
- Class I, BioLab Inc., A Chemtura Company, Lake Charles
- Class II, Americas Styrenics, St. James
- Class III, ExxonMobil, Plastics, Baton Rouge
- Class IV, Shell, Geismar
The three main categories the awards are scored on are Personnel Safety, Process Safety and Environmental Performance. Plants are awarded or penalized points in each of these categories based on their performance.
“We place high priority towards continuous improvement with corrective action and completion reviewed for excellence,” said Americas Styrenics Plant Manager, Stephen Koontz.
The SAFE Awards began in the late 1990s as a way to combat the accusations of the chemical industry by media, legislators and citizens alike. The official mission of SAFE is to promote continuous improvement in safety and environmental performance, build a valuable database of peer norms for plant safety and environmental data and honor outstanding performance with annual awards.
“Our people are the key,” said BioLab Plant Manager, Robert Gelinas. “All plant facilities have safety procedures in place, but our employees look out for each other, doing all they can to promote a safe environment.”
Safe Awards – Add 1
Though everyone strives to win the awards, an extra incentive to participating in SAFE has been using the collected statistics to create a powerful analytical database that dates back to 1995 and helps members benchmark performance while becoming steadily safer.
“Safety is our fundamental value above all else,” said ExxonMobil Plastics Plant Manager, Charles Dabadie. “This award truly recognizes our workforce’s ownership of safety. Our workers are committed to the highest standard of excellence, and their commitment keeps this site and our community safe.”
